Itinerant Teacher of the Deaf

Summary: In partnership with a transdisciplinary team, the Teacher of the Deaf acting as an Outreach Consultant integrates listening and spoken language teaching practices, adult coaching techniques and record-keeping skills to enable access, learning, and social interactions of students who are D/HH that use listening and spoken language.
Responsibilities:
- Review student records for the purpose of understanding the student’s educational history, family vision, overall progress and current needs.
- Provide specially designed instruction, related services, supplementary aids and services and/or supports for school personnel as a listening and spoken language subject matter expert in alignment with student IEPs/504 Plans.
- Provide in-service training to administrators, support staff, teachers and families regarding the characteristics and educational implications of hearing loss using adult coaching techniques
- With attention to aspects of a Least Restrictive Environment, observe students in the classroom to evaluate attending skills, communication repair strategies, use and effectiveness of equipment, and access to instruction, accommodations and social interactions.
- Evaluate student progress through formal and informal assessments and assist in the development of student IEPs, with an emphasis on meeting the unique needs of students who are deaf/hard of hearing in neighborhood schools,
- Collaborate with educational and clinical audiologists to optimize each student’s access to sound and spoken language. This requires an understanding of current amplification and assistive technology.
- Facilitate team problem-solving, conveying the impact of a child’s hearing loss on classroom participation.
- Liaise with associated professionals, including external educational personnel and fellow members of the Statewide Outreach Team, to support coordinated care of students.
- Deliver Specially Designed Instruction, Related Services, Supplementary Aids and Services and/or Supports for School Personnel in alignment with student IEPs, using the Principles of Listening and Spoken Language Practice,
- Modify curriculum and materials according to the individual needs of the student
- Complete paperwork associated with services to students.
- Lesson plans

- Meet applicable deadlines.
- Other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities: This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.
Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Education/Experience: Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Deaf Education, Special Education, Speech Pathology or Audiology plus a minimum of one to three years of experience working in the field of Listening and Spoken language.
Certificates and Licenses: Must currently hold or be eligible for at least one of the following: Teacher Certification in Washington, Speech Language Pathologist, CCC-SLP, Audiologist, CCC-A. LSLS certification is required.
Computer Skills: Proficiency with Google Suite and Office required. Comfort with remote technology is necessary.
Desired Skills: Excellent oral and written communication skills. A proven ability to communicate with a variety of professionals, teachers, family members, and children. The ability to tailor the message and communication style to the audience is essential. Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple projects/tasks simultaneously and effectively prioritize projects and tasks. An approachable individual who provides a high level of teamwork and cross-functional collaboration. Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills.

To perform this job, the employee is regularly required to sit for long periods of time. The employee must constantly reach with hands and fingers. Employee must be able to work in close contact with small and large groups. Frequent listening and talking is required, and extensive keyboard typing is required. The employee is required to read and respond to documents in hard copy and electronic form.
Travel: This position will require regular regional travel. The individual in this role must have a reliable form of transportation and must have a valid driver’s license and car insurance.
